Autumn in Castine, Maine

Maine is more than summer cottages, lobsters and lighthouses. It's a place of stunning natural beauty, especially in the fall. There is a popular saying that there are more trees than people in this state. Imagine those trees aglow in brilliant shades of golds and crimsons, and how magical they are juxtaposed to the blue sea and lakes. So come experience a luminous fall in Maine.

Our lovely town of Castine, which is even more special this time of year, is a must. After all, Castine is "under the elms and by the sea!"

For more information, check out the town travel site and Facebook page. Also, visit the fine website of Castine Historical Society

Here are photos from our recent stay in October:
A dramatic approach to the Penobscot Narrows Bridge on Route 1. Each time we cross the bridge, it feels as if we've arrived in Downeast. (If you've made this drive, you know what I mean.)
At the British Canal . . . and almost home!
A spectacular fall moment on the Town Common.

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Monument was erected in 1886, and it poignantly reads:

IN MEMORY OF THE
SOLDIERS AND SAILORS
FROM CASTINE,
WHO OFFERED THEIR LIVES IN
THE WAR FOR THE PRESERVATION
OF THE UNION
1861 - 1865
 "WITH A GREAT SUM OBTAINED
WE THIS FREEDOM"
Meanwhile up on Battle Avenue, the panoramic views out to the bay were starting to look very autumnal. It was the perfect afternoon for a sail to enjoy the foliage. BTW, that's not us . . . we don't have a boat :(
After Castine, be sure to take a drive to the nearby towns such as Blue Hill where the native wild blueberry fields put on a dazzling show.
This charming little cottage in Penobscot has such an incredible setting. Guessing from the chimney, there might be a fireplace inside. If you are the owner, please invite me for a visit :) I'll bring lunch!
And rise early to experience the land and sea cloaked in fog - very Maine!

If you missed my post on Castine this past summer, read it here.

Enjoy these beautiful days ~
Loi

  7. Hello Loi, Except for the "stern and rock-bound coast" images you show us, a New England fall is remarkably like that in Northern Ohio; of course the two are historically related. We also have our share of Sugar Maples, which provide a lot of the bright color. I think my favorite picture here is the misty one at the very end, so evocative and beautifully lit.

  12. Breathtaking! What a wonderful way to start my day... Castine Cliffs, a charming cottage in Penobscot ...Blue Hill with native wild blueberries ... an orchestra of fog... gorgeous! We were in Kennebunkport, Maine several years ago we drove up from Boston for a couple of days in May, a little cold, but I have never seen so much water flowing through an area just lovely. I wish we would have known about Castine; It's a perfect vacation spot! Thank you Loi for sharing! xxRié

  28. LOI! I just came in myself from grocery shopping AND taking photos along the way. I feel so fortunate to live in a city where even driving to the grocery store is a treat for the senses, with all the lakes and creeks. I took photos too, and they are gorgeous.

OK.....you are in the perfect, I mean PERFECT setting for the iconic October we all love. Clapboard homes, maples, sea and fog, you have it all. Is that your home, that gorgeous white beauty? And the bay...how I remember going up the Maine coast while living in New England! And that fabulous little cottage - that scene looks like Scandinavia!

  34. Hi Loi, such a gorgeous town. Your photos are beautiful, and those eastern towns sure put on quite a show in autumn. The landscape looks so similar to where I grew up in nearby New Brunswick. Charming, quiet, beautiful and brutal winters. Haha. It must be such a treat to get up there for a long weekend, though I'm sure it's always busy. But what a reward at the end of the road.

  39. I've been meaning to leave a comment here all weekend…such beautiful images. You really caught it at just the right moment in time and in the year. Is it difficult to go back to D.C.? It must seem like such culture shock, in so many ways, each time you return. Will you be going up much in the winter, or is it really weather-dependent? Christmas maybe? Look forward to more, of course!

  50. A few years ago in September, we vacationed in Castine and that little red cottage caused us great angst! The property that it sits on was for sale as well as the main house, and we drove by it daily on our many excursions. I was convinced that we needed to buy the property--and that little red cottage--my husband not so sure! Interestingly, the shoreline is scattered with bricks as it was once the location of a brickworks (can you imagine all the lovely garden paths using those bricks?!) If it is any consolation, the main house on the property is not historic and wasn't very interesting.. We made it back home to the midwest without a real estate purchase-- and since home is now near San Francisco, the trek to Maine would be quite long. Seeing that picture brought back all those memories :) and the mostly wonderful vacation we had in Castine! Thank you for the wonderful post.

  61. Hello Loi,
Castine is so beautiful in the Autumn... in my city (Valencia, Spain) we don´t have autumn bc the weather is always warm like spring, except 2 or 3 months a year, so Castine looks so charming to my.
Thank you for stopping by my blog, I was in Washington DC during my honeymoon too, hopefully I will write about that beautiful city soon.
Regards from Spain and sorry for my English!

  67. How did I miss this post!!??? I have lived in New England my entire life (and I am no spring chicken!)---Autumn has never ceased to stop me in my tracks pretty much on a daily basis and I am not being dramatic for blog purposes. Simply driving down the highway is like driving through a work of art.
I will be the first to complain about dealing with all the dropping leaves but then look up and smile at the gorgeous leaves about me.
Life is good in New England and I am so happy you have found a second home in Maine.
